Odeion discoverred in Roman City in Israel...

This is just what we need:

Another fascinating finding was an odeion – a small, roofed theater-like structure, the first of its kind to be exposed in Israel. According to the researchers, structures such as these were quite common in the Roman era and were intended for poetry-reading performances and musical recitals for an elect audience. While the average theater of those times had some 4,000 seats, the odeion had no more than 600 sitting places.

Impromptu Session

After this weeks' Latin meetup, we walked down to the Roman wall remains next to Tower Hill tube, and had an impromptu session - 5 of us took turns declaiming from Cicero, Catullus, Martial, Horace, Livy, and others next to Trajan's statue. Lisa came along, and took some video of us for her documentary.
This was a good spot, and we may repeat the exercise following out next Sunday meeting in a month's time - people were staying away because of the huge video recorder, as it looked like a film sh… Continue

Latin on the Trafalgar Square Plinth

Jonathan omnibus salutem.

PR?

I see some good suggestions on the blog for generating some publicity. The Times pops in little notes about "what's on today" and they might be interested. Are we going to have any signs or handouts at Paternoster Sq?

Location Arranged

We now have permission to use Paternoster Square - it is simply a matter of arranging the dates - weekday evenings and weekends are available.
I have given Broadgate Estates notice of our next meeting - Thursday 16 July, at 6.30 pm at Paternoster Square.

Upon arriving on the square, we have to go to Paternoster Lodge on the Square and using the intercom, dial the control room and let security know that we are on site.

What is this all about?

The Collegium Poetarum was a guild that met in Rome, and we know poets and actors belonged to it. We know it held competitions, and public recitals, but the rest is lost in the haze of time.

This is the reincarnation of the Collegium - the goal is to take Latin out of the schoolroom, out of the living room, and out into the marketplace. Latin Oratory was written to be orated, Poems were written to be read aloud, theatrical pieces, even letters, were often written to be read aloud.

All it takes… Continue
